Bottom Line

The 725-room Lexington offers a stylish and luxurious stay in Manhattan’s Midtown East neighborhood. Featuring gorgeous Art Deco design throughout the property, the Lexington impresses immediately with its expansive lobby, which features a posh bar, ample seating, and a carefully curated collection of art. Rooms feature flat-screen TVs, iHome docking stations, Keurig coffee makers, and marble bathrooms with Lather toiletries. On-site dining options include the Chinese restaurant S. Dynasty, a neighborhood favorite, and Raffles, a more casual diner-style eatery. All in all, it's a good four-pearl value -- guests will be hard-pressed to find another hotel near Grand Central offering this level of style for the price. Just note that some rooms are small and those on lower floors may experience street noise.

Oyster Hotel Review

The Lexington Hotel, Autograph Collection

Hotel Class:Upscale

Scene

A big, stylish hotel with Art Deco decor and an impressive history

The Lexington is a stylish and luxurious option in Manhattan’s skyscraper-heavy, business-centric Midtown East neighborhood. It was completely renovated in 2013, and the updated design emphasizes the hotel's Art Deco roots and evokes the playful and sumptuous vibe of the jazz age.

The expansive, two-story lobby impresses from the get-go, chic seating (a few chairs sport zebra print) and with purple, geometric rugs over marble tile floors. A carefully curated art collection with original works by Ruben Toledo is on display throughout the hotel, and bold Art-Deco-inspired murals can be found in the lobby, the hallways, and even the elevators. Subtle details reference the hotel's impressive history; in each room, for example, guests will find the story of how Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe lived in one of the penthouse suites during their marriage.

The Lexington's old marquee is located in the hotel’s original entrance; guests should be sure to take a look at its gorgeous Art Deco design.

Location

Located in skyscraper- and restaurant-lined Midtown East, blocks from Grand Central Station and alongside other big, old hotels, the Lexington is central, but quiet in the evening.

The Lexington is located in the center of Midtown East, a part of the city where many New Yorkers come to work. Iconic skyscrapers like the Chrysler Building and the Seagram Building dominate the skyline and swanky business hotels -- the InterContinental, the W New York, and the Waldorf-Astoria -- are all just a block from the Lexington. On the western border of Midtown East (about a five-minute walk from the hotel), Fifth Avenue is home to shopping icons such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Tiffany & Co., along with high-end flagships such as Gucci and Versace. About a five-minute walk east of the hotel are great restaurants that line 2nd Avenue. Nearby, some sporty dive bars can be a bit lively if the right game is on, but this is an area better known for popular tourist attractions such as Rockefeller Center, Grand Central Station, the Museum of Modern Art, and the New York Public Library (all within walking distance).

  • Three short blocks from the 6 subway line; five short blocks from the E and M lines; six blocks from the 4, 5, 6, and 7 lines at Grand Central Station (a major transporation hub)
  • 10-minute walk to Rockefeller Center, home to the Top of the Rock observation deck (for a panoramic view of the entire city) as well as an outdoor ice-skating rink and an enormous Christmas tree in the winter
  • 10-minute walk to the Museum of Modern Art (the "MoMA")
  • 20-minute subway ride to Central Park
  • 20-minute subway ride to Times Square
  • 20-minute subway ride to the Empire State Building
  • 25-minute subway ride to the ferry terminal to visit the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island
  • 25-minute subway ride to the American Museum of Natural History
  • 25-minute subway ride to the Metropolitan Museum of Art (the "Met")

Rooms

Stylish rooms with playful Art Deco details and modern technology

The stylish rooms continue the hotel's Art Deco theme, with nods to the jazz era such as squiggly patterns on the wallpaper and the song lyrics printed on the lampshades. Beds are comfortable and the linens are personalized with more song lyrics and a monogrammed L for Lexington; headboards are bright orange or vibrant purple, which adds to the playfulness of the rooms' design. The framed art on the walls was thoughtfully selected, unlike much hotel art. Amenities include flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, iHome docking stations, and Keurig coffee makers. Bathrooms have beautiful marble, geometric print wallpaper, and Lather toiletries. Some rooms feature balconies with great Midtown views. Free USA Today newspapers are delivered daily.

Features

A dimly lit lobby bar, several restaurants, and a 24-hour fitness center

The hotel has two on-site restaurants: S. Dynasty, a Chinese restaurant which has been a neighborhood favorite for years, and Raffles, a casual diner-style eatery. A third restaurant is also in the works. The lobby bar is relaxed and dimly lit. Starbucks is also on-site for grab-and-go bites and caffeine fixes. This Starbucks is also the site of the original entrance to the Lexington -- be sure to check out the original Art Deco marquee. The 24-hour fitness and business centers are both well-equipped, though the latter is a bit small. There is ample meeting space available, however.
