There's nothing quite like fresh flowers in the house to lift your mood, and they don't have to be expensive. You can even snag some fresh flowers at the grocery store. In fact, you can design your own, affordable arrangement with flowers from Trader Joe's.
Of course, fresh flowers aren't the only selling point of Trader Joe's. Who doesn't love the wide array of snacks, cheeses, and other goods the beloved grocery chain has to offer? But their high-quality flowers stand out, especially considering their low cost.
“From a florist’s perspective, I love that Trader Joe’s carries such a wide variety of flowers with prices comparable to wholesale pricing at the flower market,” Katherine Yamamoto, a Los Angeles-based florist and Trader Joe’s enthusiast, tells The Spruce.
We reached out to Yamamoto for her advice on how to make your own flower arrangement with Trader Joe's stock. Turns out, you can create a bouquet for less than $10.
Pick a Focal Flower, Filler Flower, and Greenery
Focal Flower Tips
The flower section is usually front and center at Trader Joe's. It's hard to miss. Once you're there, start off by searching for a type of focal flower that stands out. These will be the flowers that you plan the rest of your bouquet around.
And don't worry, there's no need to overthink it. You can't really go wrong here, as the focal flower of your bouquet is totally up to you. If you're struggling to choose, Yamamoto suggests you opt for tulips, hydrangeas, or roses.
“Make sure you’re looking for bunches that have more closed buds, so your bouquet can last as long as possible,” Yamamoto says.
Tip
If you have a specific flower in mind, call your Trader Joe's ahead of time to see it it's in stock. You can also ask an employee when their store restocks the flower section so that you always have plenty of options from which to choose.
Filler Flower Tips
Filler flowers are also an essential aspect of a flower bouquet. These flowers are typically smaller and more plentiful, filling in the space between your larger flowers. Examples include chamomile or baby's breath. This is also an opportunity to choose a secondary color for your arrangement.
Greenery Tips
Next, don't skimp on foliage. Your flowers will really pop when compared to lush, green leaves. Eucalyptus is typically available for just this purpose, and it smells great.
Unwrap and Trim
As soon as you get home, prep your flowers. This involves not only removing them from their packaging but also snipping away any damaged leaves or leaves that will be below the water line in your vase.
Remove about at least an inch off the bottom of the stem, though more may be necessary depending on the size of your vase. Cut the stems at angle, which actually allows them to absorb water better and lengthens their lifespan.
Choose the Perfect Vase
You can further elevate the look of your bouquet with a stylish vase. And since you're saving money with Trader Joe's flowers, perhaps you'll be able to splurge on a vase or two. There are plenty of vase styles out there, so pick whatever suits your style best.
“Skip the mason jar and go for a glass vessel with dimension,” Yamamoto says. “While you can never go wrong with a basic cylinder, be bold with your choice of vase and pick a funky, modern one if you like.”
Arrange Your Bouquet Like a Pro
Finally, it's time to arrange the bouquet. Your greenery should be placed first, since it will provide the overall framework. Pop in your focal flower next, and lastly, fill in open spaces with any secondary filler flowers you chose.Don't get too picky about the arrangement. Flowers are imperfect, and bouquets are imperfect too. You'll get better and better at arranging flowers over time, and since Trader Joe's makes the hobby affordable, you can do so without breaking your budget.
