Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla-Perez (popularly known as Selena) is from Corpus Christi. Captain Blas Maria de la Garza Falcon sits upon a trusty stead (waving his hat in welcome) overlooking the bay. It sits just south of the Selena statue. Sculpted by artist Sherman Coleman, it was installed in 1992.

In 1762, Falcon set up an outpost and way station near the Nueces River (present-day Nueces County). From here, he explored the coasts of Padre Island, Mustang Island, and St. Joseph’s Island. This was still Spanish territory back then.

You can thank Falcon for bringing the first longhorn cattle to South Texas and setting up a ranch.
